Cabinets on the go

After a never-ending list of interruptions over the last few days I managed to get some clear time to start on the first of the cabinets I have to make for the kitchen. I chose to start with the smallest of the chests of drawers on the grounds that a bad mistake would waste the least material.
The overall design of the kitchen is deliberately simple with no upper level cabinets and predominantly drawers - I hate trying to rummage around in the back of cabinets. The major storage space is the large pantry, which would be off to the right of this image -

Basic design for kitchen

From left to right we have

  • desk, for Bridget’s MacBook to connect to speakers, for the phone etc
  • single drawer unit
  • dishwasher
  • sink unit
  • double drawer unit
  • cooktop unit
  • oven unit
We’re going to use two different materials for the countertops - the light brown above is Beech wood butcher-block from Ikea and the dark grey will be... something dark grey and heat resistant, not sure exactly what material as yet. Quartz seemed like a nice idea until we got a quote. Ouch.
The first stage of the single drawer unit looks like this -

The front face-frame is larger than typical to make it look like legs, a visual cue that will be used on all the units. With a deeper than usual toe-kick setback it will look like each unit is a separate piece, which in fact they are underneath. By stepping out a couple - the sink and cooktop - a few inches further than the main run we can reinforce this impression and avoid the rather boring march of cupboards that too many kitchens suffer from.
