Tim's Personal World on the Web
So you're really curious about what I do when I'm not creating spiffy Smalltalk software ? Nosy, aren't we ;-)
The terminally nosy can read the Boring Basics below
There's a resume as well if you want one
The Boring Basics of the past, especially for obsessive-compulsives
Born 10th Jan 1960 at St David's Hospital, Ceardydd, Cymru, UK .
Married 20th Dec 1980 - since second year university, which is longer than I care to think about. And, no, there are no lascivious pictures of my wife here. So there! No kids, having raised plenty during my childhood (long story) to put anyone off the general idea. We do have a Golden Retriever by the name of Daisy who is now competely blind after the effects of SARDS (google for info); the rest are Pooh, Piglet and friends.
I've lived in:-
- Ceardydd, Wales, where I was born in St. David's Hospital;
- Sandbach, Cheshire, where we lived whilst my father was boss engineer at the Crewe locomotive works. I started school there before moving to...
- Staplehurst, Kent, where I did most of my early schooling. My first kiss was a gift from Karen, who was a friend for many years. My first naked girl was Cheryl :-) ;
- Poole, Dorset After a couple of unpleasant years at the Maidstone Grammar School I was lucky to move and go to Poole Grammar which suited me much better. This is where I really grew up, got my first motorcycles, serious girlfriends, enjoyed the exquisite pleasures of being a stage manager for a ballet school and started flying radio controlled models. ;
- Branksome Park, Dorset, where I lived with my longest friend after moving away (all of a couple of miles!) from 'home'.;
- Derby was my home when I spent a year working for Rolls-Royce Aero Engines as a prelude to my first degree. I met my wife at a post-show party for the RR amateur dramatics society!
- South Kensington, London is the home of the Imperial College. I lived in halls for the first year, just across the road from the Science Museum. And, more worryingly for a short period, just by the Iranian embassy; there was a big siege and violently exciting SAS rescue operation at the bottom of my garden!
- Wandsworth, London became home when we got married and we lived upstairs from John & Eric, the owners of a fine old victorian house next to Wandsworth Common. I commuted into college on one or other of my bikes or occasionally by bus/train/whatever. My bike got stolen there - twice! Apparently by the same little bastard...
- Carshalton, Surrey is where my father and step-mother lived and we stayed with them for a while when I was doing the RCA thing.
- Winchester, Hants - Ah, our first house. A lovely city with great history and good shopping. This is where I met Andy and we worked on the Heart of Gold whilst making a living as an IBM research Fellow.
- MountainView, California suddenly became home after I was hired by ParcPlace Systems to do Smalltalk development. See resume for details of what I did there. California was quite a shock after UK.
- Milpitas, California is where we eventually bought a house and Coulterville is where we had a country retreat for a few delightful years. (some pics here)
- Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. A small, quite pretty town with a big harbour.
- Qualicum Beach, British Columbia. A very small pretty town. We have a small rural estate.
I went to The Imperial College of Science and Technology to do Mech.Eng. in 1979 and then on to The Royal College of Art in 1982 for a masters in Industrial Design Engineering. I was the first student to engage in what has since become known as the Computer Related Design course. By a curious concatenation, I later worked for several years for Interval Research Corp. which had become a major sponsor of this selfsame course!
